PC Maintenance Reminder for July

June 29th, 2010 Author: Chris Sully

Regular PC maintenance is as important as routinely changing the fluids in your car. Without this regular upkeep, your computer can become a slow, draggy, unusable box that has you thinking about a trip to your local electronics retailer.

In today’s article, we’ve posted links to the tools you need and a simple “5-Point Maintenance Plan” that you can follow to keep your PC running like new (or better). The average user can perform these tasks in 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size (hard drive) and speed (RAM and processor) of the computer.

What You Will Need To Get Started – Tools

All of the tools you will need for this routine maintenance are posted and available for you on the JumpstartMyPC.com Tools page. We add new items to this area from time-to-time and keep all of the links updated with the most recent versions of each application. Simply locate an application that you would like to use and click on the Software link out to the right. You’ll be directed to an external site and the download will begin.

There are 5 main areas that you will need to focus on each time you perform maintenance on your PC.

Scan – Malware, Spyware and other unwanted malicious programs are installed without your knowledge.

Program: Spybot Search and Destroy (tools page)

Clean – As you surf the internet, your browser collects files in a temporary folder. These files are not deleted until you tell your computer to do so.

Program: CCleaner (tools page)

Registry Cleaning – The registry stores configuration settings and options for Windows. Unfortunately, it never cleans out old files.

Program: Abexo Registry Cleaner (tools page) NOT FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS

Things you could do occasionally

Some things that you can do to keep your Pc running good to to defrag your computer once a week. Now If you never done this before this process might take a long time to complete but it will be worth it. If you were to do this more often the process will take less time to do complete.
Also getting rid of  files that are left over from uninstalling programs. For example if u you uninstall iTunes, the folder will still be on you disk drive but not instlalled. And a way that you can get rid of these files for sure :

  • You select the file you would like to delete
  • You hold down shift and press delete.
  • Then hit okay .
Doing this will skip the step of bringing it to the recycle bin then deleting it. With this process you just deleting on the spot.

Maintenance

The first thing i would like to talk about is Tune-Up Utilities.

Tune-Up Utilities is a great piece of software. I have personally used this software for a couple of year. And it tends to get the job done. This is a very easy to use application for your pc.

Features :

Temp file management, registry cleaners and start-up program controls are the bread-and-butter of these utilities, and these basics work in TuneUp more quickly and easily than most. However, the app also sports great add-on tools you don't usually see in a utility program. It offers a variety of Internet and program-acceleration tweaks as well as Windows performance enhancers. The crash-preventing MemOptimizer, a file shredder, deleted file recovery, and a respectable uninstall utility round out the suite. You even can automate maintenance tasks with the scheduler or tweak Windows' appearance with the styler tool. The built-in RescueCenter can restore all changes completely or one by one
